High-Throughput Beamforming MIMO Receiver for Millimeter Wave Communication

In this paper, we present a complete high-throughput MIMO receiver for millimeter wave communication. With vast spectrum and small antenna element size, millimeter wave becomes very attractive to support next generation high data rate mobile communication. Besides using transmitter and receiver beamforming to overcome the unfavorable propagation characteristics and to achieve high energy efficiency, millimeter wave communication also adds challenges on the system and architecture design to support such high data rate. By optimizing the architecture, our dedicated design, including beamforming control, synchronization, channel estimation, MIMO detection, and channel decoder, can run up to 1.52Gbps data rate on FPGA. New algorithm for detecting the synchronization symbols is also proposed.
